Art on the Line
“Beginning without thought” is an attempt by artist Billy Burke to explain the foundation of his work practice.  Billy will be a presenter at the first 2008 Art on the Line forum at Mars Hill Café, Parramatta, on Saturday, February 16, at 4pm. He is likely to be joined by other artist friends in presenting work.

Fida Haq : Homage to S M Sultan

Long long ago, when I was a year 5 student in Narail, Bangladesh, I had this pot-luck to be a student of S M Sultan, the legendary painter. This opportunity of a lifetime was short-lived though as we stayed there only for about six months.

But Narail, the river Chitra (that almost flowed through our bungalow) along with its fishing boats with otters on board, flowing logs from the Sundarbans and its lush green banks and Sultan, in his flowing black robe and long hair, his flute, his pets are all quite vivid in my memory even to this day.

But the sketch and colour books that I've dearly held on to since 1974 have aged and yellowed.

I am publishing a few sketches and watercolours from our painting sessions here and plan to put more of these works as I find the time.
