Installation detail from Change is good, so change please change

These two new exhibitions bring together Olympic construction related photographs and memorabilia with specially commissioned artworks on the themes of construction and sustainable development.

My work for Sydney Olympic Park Industrial History - Olympic Transformation is a collaboration with photographer Bob Peters, who took a series of time-lapse photos of Olympic construction sites. The multimedia installation named Change is good, so change please change brings together video and cement painting on concrete slabs.

Here's the blurb for the work:

The artwork intersperse time-lapse photo-sequences by Bob Peters with parallel sequence of animations by Fida Haq and make a set of parallel narratives making the essence of construction-based change unfold in front of viewer's eyes. These parallel narratives at times compete with and complement each other offering the impression of strands of stories unfolding at the same time at a dizzying pace. Accompanied by audio that accentuates the transitions and parallels of these stories, the effect is a whirlpool of audio-visual stimulants that refer to the fast-paced nature of change in modern times. It is a multi-layered, multi-faceted tale - laden with simultaneous feelings of loss and joy - of change - the ultimate constant.
Accompanying the digital projection is a set of murals on concrete slabs again showing building and other workers at work during the Olympics - referring to the more human and humane side of the process of change.

  • Harris Community Centre Mural
    Harris Community Centre mandala design

In this exciting project that I am currently involved in for the Harris Community Centre in Ultimo, NSW, I am painting a large-scale - 7.5m x 3.5x - outdoor mural with community input in it. The mural is based on a sun mandala pattern and I suppose it's going to look really great and add immensely to the visual stimulus of the Centre front and its surroundings when executed.

The dance group of Gomes and Correya sisters who performed in We [Dhakai] are [Jamdani] Animals did it again at this year's Uptown Festival.

Their performance this time - even without the sari-covered backdrop of large photomedia works of Jamdani animals, which was the case last time - was superb (well, just as last time) and drew large rounds of applause from the crowd.
And just to prove that they are worthy, they performed both at the kids' stage and the main stage. Here is a photo from their performance on that sun-drenched day for you to see.

  • Industrial History of Sydney Olympic Park - the Abattoir and the Brickworks
In this exhibition that peeks at the less glamourous industrial past of the Sydney Olympic Park as an abattoir and brickworks facility, I'm displaying a video work named Deep as a brickpit based on the Wentworth Common brickpit - the venue for the beautiful Ring Walk today.
The exhibition is on at the gallery at Building 18, Newington Armory, Jamieson Street, Sydney Olympic Park and runs from the 24th Sept 2006 to 14th Jan 2007 (excepting Christmas Eve 24th Dec and New Years Eve 31st Dec) and will be open on Sundays only from 11am to 4pm as part of the Explore the Armory program.
Entry to the exhibition is free.

    Details about the work:
    Title: Deep as a brickpit
    Medium: Video
    Duration: 5'36"
    Year: 2006

Still from Deep as a brickpit
    Video still by: Fida Haq

Still from Deep as a brickpit featuring Nicholas Coker Still from Deep as a brickpit

Brick is frontier grade material. Want to build a civilisation? Build brick. Want to found a city? Found a brickpit. Want to raise walls so that you can have different rooms for putting your different emotions to rest? Make brick. Brick is all too heavily laden with meaning: from being a metaphor for civilisation to being a symbol of the status-quo, the socio-anthropological connotation of brick as a building-block that lends itself to the creation of something greater is ingrained in our awareness.

In the video work Deep as a brickpit, I've tried capturing a few of these symbolic significance of brick and its manufacturing process by investigating the past glory and then the abandonment and the eventual beatification of the Wentworth Common brickpit at the Sydney Olympic Park. Images in the video are at times accompanied by sounds from SOPA archive and chants by brickbreaking women from my native Bangladesh where brick is not only made but also broken into small pebbles by these women so that they can be used in concrete structures. I believe traditional dance moves by an African Australian dancer incorporated in the video adds yet another layer to the pesky concepts of new frontiers, forced or unforced migration and the price paid for built environments in this post-colonial era.

WSN Environmental Solutions Grass Roots Sponsorship Program
Rhythm of Life Well, finally managed to finish Rhythm of Life for WSN. It turned out to be even a bigger work than 'Scenes from Idyll' and a very different one in terms of content and mood though both draw from the tradition of Islamic art quite heavily. Finding the realm of Islamic Art quite fascinating as it seems there is an absolutely limitless traditions and schools to delve into.
Will put in info about the display schedule of the work at the Parramatta Library, WSN festival and possibly even at 'Of Angels and Chariots' as it becomes clear to me. So, please keep checking.

    Previous posting:
As part of the program, I'm going to create a large-scale public artwork of mosaic like patterns from aluminum foils retrieved from throw-away drink cans. The work will depict tessellated floral patterns based on ceramic tile decorations generally found in Islamic Cultures.
It is to be a large two dimensional work and will have a mural like attribute in terms of covering a particular part of a wall of a public space in a covered or semi-covered area.
The proposed art work will provide a mechanism to assist Parramatta Council in promoting to the community the broader need to reduce consumption and waste and will be a major focus point for the promotion of its Waste and Resource Recovery Plan to the community.
Period during which material is collected and background work is done: January - April 2006
    Date execution starts: May 2006

  • Scenes From Idyll
Just completed the humongous project that was Scenes From Idyll. Easily my most ambitious work so far in the 'drink-can' media - well if there is such a thing. Liverpool Hospital, NSW commissioned the work through Affordable Art Australia for the ambulatory waiting area of its Mental Health wing.
Scenes From Idyll is a triptych with each pane measuring 60cms by 1.2m. The work is again inspired by motifs and patterns of ceramic tiles emanating from 16th/17th century Syria and Turkey and executed with the technique and riotous colours of Rickshaw art of Bangladesh.

    Love Hurts
    Love hurts
In this exhibition, a few contemporary artists will present their reflections on objects from the Parramatta Heritage Centre's collection and what they mean for Parramatta today.
I became interested in a circa 1850's wooden toothbrush - now broken in two with all the bristles missing - and a cracked fine china tooth-powder case which were found in the now-extinct 'Babe in the Woods' pub in Parramatta. So expect to see some really mischievous photographic works that these 'artefacts' inspired. Here's a sample.

    Mondrian of suburbia:

The project was about painting a couple of traffic control boxes in Merrylands and Westmead areas of Western Sydney.
This was carried out as part of the art boxes project by Holroyd Council. You can learn more about the project from Michelle Desailly, Cultural Officer - Strategic, Holroyd City Council by sending her an e-mail.

The project was quite interesting for me as the ideas for the works came out of a workshop I held with year 11 art students of Catherine McAuley, Westmead. I guess it is interesting to see that in the kids' minds, apparently complicated concepts like religion, spirituality and multiculturalism can reside side by side without much fuss.

Here are a couple of photos of the works:

You can see the works at the intersections of

    • Treves and Macfarlane St, Merrylands and
    • Amos St and Hawkesbury Rd, Westmead
Note: I am looking for a patchwork quilt artist who can render these works onto a couple of quilts.
Anyone intereted in this mad project? Let me know.

    Mondrian of Westmead vandalised!

Mondrian of Westmead vandalised Recently (sometime in February 2005), Mondrian of Westmead suffered an act of mindless vandalism. The left side panel with the aboriginal flag and the front panel, especially the octagonal Islamic flower pattern and the paisley patterns by its side, got severely smeared by black paint from vandals' spray.
I eventually restored the vandalised areas last weekend (5.3.05).
The Holroyd Council is going to spray it with anti-graffiti spray soon to protect it from further attacks.
Local people please keep an eye on the box!
